We love these as they are period correct for 1966-the early 1980's and being a simple black on white combo, look brilliant. Several have a special history which interests us, too.

SMV-787

Registered to the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 that the Porsche Factory & Alan Hamilton entered into the 1979 Repco Reliability Trial. Car No 1, and thus the first car flagged away for the event, it was driven by the Factory driver Edgar Hermann & SA’s Gary Rainsford and finished the gruelling around Australia event in 8th place outright.

Updated 28th March, 2011.

We have collected a rare selection of R & S series plates that have a special and unique place in both South Australia’s & indeed Australia’s motoring heritage. We therefore present to you some of the most interesting plates registered to cars in SA.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the golden age of Aussie touring car racing, The Fords, Chryslers and Holdens squared off on the racetracks of Australia.

The Ford and Holden race teams had their motor racing programs based interstate, so the Chrysler factory team flew the flag for SA.

Amazingly, most of these touring cars were road registered, and as the Chrsyler Factory team was SA based their cars were prepared and registered in SA.

Throughout this period legends like Leo Geoghegan, Doug Chivas, Jim McKeown and Norm Beechey amongst others, raced Chrysler Australia factory entered works Pacers and Chargers, all registered in SA on SA numberplates.

These car’s were amongst the last of the road registered racers, and operated just prior to local Motor Racing becoming much more specialised as touring car’s began to become more extensively modified for circuit racing. As a result, they no longer were registered on the road.

We love this historic connection and think it is a unique occurrence to have ownership of a plate that graced some of the great motor tracks of Australia on a factory backed competition car. Yes, they are “just a plain plate”, but they are an instantly recognisable series of numbers that we registered on some of the greatest touring car driver’s cars.

Historic Plates indeed!

Data, information, race details and corrections, and  especially any pictures of these plates  in period are gladly received.

RGL-782

The Hardie Ferodo 500 was the greatest Aussie race and still is today. In SA the Chrysler Factory team entered several  works entries of Pacers in the 1970 Hardie Ferodo 500.

Leo Geogehan and Nick Ledingham finished 5th outright in this race in the factory backed 2-barrel Pacer, registered in the number RGL-782. Moffat famously won this race in his mighty GT-HO.  In these brilliant period shots you can clearly see the number RGL-782 on the race no 34 C Pacer 245.

RDM-558

My favourite of all our R series plates, as it was registered to the fantastic E-38 Charger of the Chrylser Factory team.  Everyone’s favourite driver, Norm Beechey, blasted his Charger around Bathurst in 1971’s Hardie Ferodo 500 and finished 6th in Class D, and 12th outright. A fantastic yellow colour (anyone know the colour code and name?) it ‘s livery had red decals and red stripes on the roof at Bathurst.

I’m currently researching the other events the plate ran at, but we know it to have been raced at Warwick Farm, Calder and Amaroo.

RDM-559

The SA  alpha-numeric plate RDM-559 was registered to the fantastic E-38 Charger of the Chrylser Factory team, and in the main  was registered on Leo Geoghegan’s E38 Charger. Geoghegan’s Charger had this number in several races and is pictured on his white with blue decals and stripes Charger at Sandown in 1971.

I’m currently researching the other events the plate ran at, but we know it to have been raced at Warwick Farm, Calder and Amaroo in 1971.
